2. Get a Social Security Card
All non-US residents should have a Social Security Number (SSN). According to the Social Security website, you don’t need one, but you should probably have one. Apply for a Social Security card at the same time you apply for your visa.
Apply on paper (Form DS-230) or online (Form DS-260).
You need a SSN to open a bank account, get a driver’s license, apply for a job and other benefits. It is not a personal identification number and should not be used on doctor’s forms, etc.
